2018 ASNT Shanghai Division Phased Array Seminar was Successfully Held in Yantai

On January 6, 2018, ASNT Shanghai Division phased array seminar was held in Yantai Huijing Hotel, Shandong. The meeting was hosted by ASNT Shanghai Branch, and was co-organized by Shandong Yuanzhuo Testing Technology Co., Ltd. 94 non-destructive testing experts from all over the country attended the meeting.

 

This conference was another grand occasion after the annual meeting of ASNT Shanghai Branch held in Shanghai in November 2017. Members who failed to attend the Shanghai Annual Meeting further learned about the spirit of the Shanghai Annual Meeting and took this opportunity to have in-depth exchanges and discussions about phased array technology.


At first, Jin Lei, committee member of ASNT Shanghai Branch presented to ASNT members and other expert representatives ASNT Shanghai Branch overview, as well as the purpose and process of the meeting. Then the meeting came into the special report session.


Firstly, Cao Haijing from CCSI non-destructive testing laboratory introduced phased array application process approval process. Process approval is the key step of phased array on-site use. Cao Haijing introduced in detail process preparation, process verification parameter conditions and verification process.


Then Chen Li from Wuhan Zhongke Innovative Technology Co., Ltd. introduced the cases of wind power bolts on-site testing by ultrasonic phased-array. Wind Power Bolt is an important part connecting the flange and the cylinder. Chen Li elaborated the detection of typical onsite used bolts by using the phased array combined with the guided wave, which will improve the detection efficiency and the detection rate of the defects for the wind power bolt detection and reduce failure risk.


Zhang Qinggang from Zhongxing Hailu Engineering Co., Ltd., shared many practical experiences on the PAUT testing of small-diameter thin-walled carbon steel butt joints. Zhongxing Hailu is one of the earlier users of phased array detection in the offshore industry in China. When there is no onsite experience, they relied on their own power from scratch to explore a complete set of testing procedures for later comers.


Li Jianfeng from Beijing Zouzhan Lucheng Science and Technology Co., Ltd. introduced phased array simulation imaging technology in the weld inspection. For various forms of test structure, Li Jianfeng explained the use of computer simulation software to simulate, and then to import settings, to realize phased array detection process.


Zhong Dehuang from GE Inspection Technology introduced the applications of phased array corrosion detection. For corrosion of pipeline in service, Zhong Dehuang briefly described the detection using traditional phased array and twin crystal phased array to improve the detection efficiency and accuracy.


Wang Xiaoning from Olympus introduced the advanced phased array technology in 9Ni materials LNG weld testing and DGS phased array detection technology. 9Ni steel is a coarse-grained material, acoustic performance similar to stainless steel, very difficult to be tested by phased array. Wang Xiaoning proposed the use of longitudinal wave array or matrix probe for testing feasibility. DGS phased array testing with different probe families can be used in a wide range of inspection applications, such as the inspection of welds, bridge pins and bolts, and stress corrosion cracking.


Wang Guocun from Yantai CIMC Raffles Ocean Engineering Co., Ltd. briefly introduced ISO13588 weld phased array detection method standards and ISO19285 weld phased array inspection acceptance criteria.


Lu Bo from Tumai Testing Technology (Chengdu) Co., Ltd. introduced ultrasonic phased array beamforming and focusing techniques. Lu Bo introduced the basic principles of ultrasonic beam focusing and deflection, and then used the analysis software and simulation program to model the ultrasonic phased array flaw detection. In the process of simulation, by changing the array element parameters, its influence on the ultrasonic phased array flaw detection signal was studied, which was verified with wxperiments.


Liu Enkai, from Shandong Nuclear Power Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd., introduced the research of phased array ultrasonic technology instead of radiographic testing for the butt weld of nuclear power steel containment. Containment is the last barrier of nuclear safety protection, Liu Enkai explained the background of the containment phased array detection, testing requirements, process validation and the remaining problems.


Shen Haixiao from Shanghai Unindt Technology Co., Ltd. introduced the phased array testing on the weld inspection process design and experimental demonstration. He described the phased array process parameters settings, weld inspection coverage, various scan mode settings, verification test block design, verification results and other aspects.


After those special reports, the participating experts conducted in-depth discussions on various topics.

Through this meeting, the influence of ASNT Shanghai Branch was expanded. At the same time, the sharing of the experts enhanced participants' understanding and application of phased array and its applications. All participants agreed that they benefited greatly from the meeting, and hoped ASNT Shanghai Branch would organize more and better academic exchange activities in the future.
